Research is fairly conclusive – and the results are not so promising. In fact, South Carolina ranks 48th on the list of EV-friendly states, according to a study by Bumper. The company based its findings on 10 metrics, 5 related to finances (cost to purchase, travel time to work, etc.) and 5 related to infrastructure (availability of charging stations, etc.).
But there’s hope on the horizon! Electric vehicle sales are surging across the Southeast and it looks like this trend will continue. As of July 2021, around 206,000 EVs have been sold in the region – double the number sold in 2018!
Automakers are working hard to keep up with the increasing demand. Nearly 100 pure battery electric vehicles expected to enter the market by the end of 2024.
Changes to South Carolina Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Developing
Legislators are on board as well. The U.S. Senate has recently passed a $1 trillion infrastructure bill that is not only designed to improve roads. Moreover, the bill allocates $70 million toward building electric vehicle charging stations here in the Palmetto State.
While the bill must now pass in the House of Representatives, its passage thus far shows legislators’ commitment to encouraging electric vehicle use in the years to come.
Upcoming Electric Vehicles: Carmakers Are Building Here In SC
BMW is expected to unveil a new hybrid model later this year. It will be produced at their plant right here in South Carolina. Polestar will also produce its Polestar 3 models at its Volvo-shared plant in Ridgeville, SC.
These automakers, like many others, support the Biden administration’s goal for electric cars to comprise half of U.S. auto sales by 2030.
